In-Box

Check New Mail
  1. For each message received, the following information will be displayed.
    1. The sender's name
    2. The date of the message received
    3. The Subject of the message (optional)
  2. New message(s) are listed in the Inbox in chronological order.
  3. To check for new message(s), click "Inbox" button once again at the top of the icon bar. The message(s) will be prompted out automatically.
 
Read Mail
  1. Click the subject of the designated message.
  2. You will then go to the message content; 3 options you would choose.
    1. Forward - pass a copy of the received message to someone else
    2. Reply - reply a new message to the author
    3. Reply All - reply a new message to the author and all other receivers.
  3. For "Reply Mail" and "Reply All Mail" , the default characters "Re" will be added at the beginning of the subject; and for "Forward Mail", the default characters "Fw" will be added at the beginning of the subject.
 
Deleted Selected Mail
Choose the email(s) you want to delete, then click the "Delete Selected Mail" button.

Undelete Selected Mail
After you delete the mail(s), you will see a purple spot(s) next to the email(s). You can undelete it/them by selecting the email(s) and clicking the "Undelete Selected Mail" button before you logout. A confirmation message will be prompted out when you logout. Just click "OK" to confirm you want to delete the selected items.
 
Current Folder
At the top left hand corner of the Inbox, you would notice which folder you are using by viewing the "Current Folder".

Open Folder
When you would like to open a particular folder that you have created in the "Option", simply choose the folder you would like to open the Inbox and click the button: "Open Folder".

Move Selected Mails To
To move a particular email from one folder to another folder, just select the email(s) and choose the folder that you want. Then, click "Move Selected Mails To". The email(s) will automatically transfer to your designated folder.
 
Save to PC(POP3)
In order to avoid downloading all the emails to the PC, you can use "Save to PC (POP3)" button to download the particular email that you want. Simply select the email(s) and click "Save to PC (POP3)". A successful confirmation message will be prompted out. When you go back to the Inbox, a light blue up-side-down arrow will be shown in the POP column next to the downloaded email.
 
Select all messages
When you click the "Select all messages" button, all the emails in the Inbox will be selected.
 
Status
Icon "Status" is at the bottom right hand corner of all the folders that you have. Just click it to review the total amount of the emails that have been deleted, unread or newly received. The total MB of your emails also is calculated.
 
Print Preview and Printing
  1. Get into the content that you want to print out.
  2. Click the "Print Preview" button to have a full page preview of the document if necessary.
  3. Click "Print" on the browser for printing the document.


Outbox

An outbox is a folder which help us keep all the emails that have been sent.


Write Mail

To:
Two ways for you to fill in this box. First, put at least one designated recipient in the "To:" box. Second, you can click the "Address Book" and choose the recipient's address(es) that you have created. Click the "Send" button to go back to the Message Box. Or, if you have created (the) nickname(s) in the Address Book, you just need to enter the nickname(s) in the "To:" box. For sending to more than one address, separate each of them by using a comma or a space.
 
Cc:
Put additional or secondary recipient(s) in this "carbon copy" box.
 
Bcc:
If you have any additional recipient(s) but would prefer to hide their names from the main and other carbon copy recipients, use this "blind carbon copy" box.
 
Subject
The "Subject" box is for you to enter the brief heading of your email which is an optional feature.
 
Send Message(s)
A scroll bar will be prompted out automatically when you are typing a long message in the message box. After you finished, click the "Send" button to send your email to the designated email address(es) that you chose/entered before.
 
File Attachment
You can attach a file to your message by clicking the "Attachment" button. It does not matter if you do this before you compose your message or not. You will have an opportunity to select the file to be attached and then return to your message in progress. You can either enter file name to "File To Attach" field, or click "Browse" to choose the appropriate file.
  1. Click "File Upload Add-on" button.
  2. The attached filename will be shown in the box of "File Already Attached Field"
  3. Press "Done" button to confirm or press "Delete" button to delete any unwanted attachment.
  4. The filename of the email be shown on the "Attachment" field of "Write mail" page.
 
Address Book
  1. Create the recipient's list
    1. Click the "Create" button.
    2. Enter an unique nickname in the "Nickname" box provided.
    3. Enter the description (eg. the name of the recipient) in the "Description" box provided.
    4. Enter the email address(es) in the "Address" box provided.
    5. Then, click the "Save" button. The recipient's address will be shown in the Address Book. When you select the recipient(s), you can also choose To, Cc or Bcc at the same time.
  2. Create (a) email group(s) list (the function is the same as the above except you can enter a group of email address)
    1. Click the "Create" button.
      1. Enter an unique nickname in the "Nickname" box provided.
      2. Enter the description (eg. the name of the recipient) in the "Description" box provided.
    2. Enter the email addresses in the "Address" box provided.
    3. Then, click the "Save" button. The recipient's addresses will be shown in the Address Book. When you select the particular email group, you can also choose To, Cc or Bcc at the same time.
  3. Change the information of the Address Book
    1. Select the nickname that you would like to change the information.
    2. Click the "Edit" button.
    3. Then, you can modify the information that you want.
    4. Finally, click "Save" to save the details that your have edited.
  4. Delete the recipient's or email group list(s) If you want to delete the recipient's or email group list(s) from the Address Book, simply choose the appropriate nickname(s) and click the "Delete" button.
 
Keep a Copy in Outbox
When you click the button "Keep a Copy in Outbox" before you click the "Send" button, the email will be kept a copy in the outbox.


Email-to-fax

Email-to-fax without Attachment (web mail)
  1. Go to the HKBN Web site and login
  2. Click the "E-mail to Fax" button.
  3. Type the headline in the "Subject" field and Recipient's Name(s) in "Attn" field which are both optional for you to fill in.
  4. Choose the "local" or "international" fax option. For local fax transmission, enter fax number only. For international fax transmission, enter the country code, area code and fax number in the appropriate fields.
  5. For sending to 2 or at most 10 recipients, click "Add to List" button after each successful entry. The fax numbers will then be shown in the field of "Fax List".
  6. If you want to delete the recipient's name(s), highlight the recipient's name and click "Delete from List" button.
  7. For creating the fax number(s) for future uses, click the "Fax Book" button. On the Screen of "Fax Book", enter the recipient's name in the "Attn" field. Choose local or international fax, and enter the (country code), (area code) and fax number in the appropriate fields. Then, press the "Save" button after each entry. "Fax Book" also has the "Edit" and "Delete" functions which are the same as the "Address Book". For details, please refer to point 3 and 4 of the "Address Book".
  8. For Attachment function, click the "Attachment" button and refer to the "Email-to-fax with Attachment" Section.
  9. Type the message in the "Message" box. Press "Fax Preview" to browse.
  10. Click the "Send" button. For keeping a copy in the "Outbox", click the box below the "message" box.
*Remark 1. Since HKBN fax service is processed via PSTN , HK$0.033/minute PNETS charge will be debited to your account.
2. For overseas fax transmission, a super low HKBN fax rate will be charged.
3. Document will be faxed five times at most if any failure occurs in the fax process.
 
Email-to-fax with Single Attachment Function (web mail)
  1. Make sure all the installation and the default settings are correct. When using the system for first time, run the Preferences program or open the Tiffwk16.ini file and verify the settings.
  2. After composing your document, pull down the "File" menu and press the "Print" button.
  3. In the Print window, specify "Tiffworks" as the printer.
  4. Press the "OK" button. The file will be saved (i.e. "C:\Windows\Temp\ctimail.tif").Go to HKBN and login.
  5. Click the "E-mail to Fax" button.
  6. Click the "Attachment' button.
  7. Click the "Browse" button. In the "Browse for file" box, choose the appropriate filename of your composed document in C:\Windows\Temp directory and then click the "Open" button.
  8. Click the "Upload" button.
  9. The filename "ctimail.tif" appears in the "File Already Attached Field".
  10. Press "Done" button to confirm or press "Delete" button to delete any unwanted attachment.
  11. "Email-to-Fax" screen will appear, fill up the relevant fields and click the "Send" button. Your message and the attachment(s) will then be sent to the recipient's fax machine(s).
*Remark 1. Since HKBN fax service is processed via PSTN , HK$0.033/minute PNETS charge will be debited to your account.
2. For overseas fax transmission, a super low HKBN fax rate will be charged.
3. Document will be faxed five times at most if any failure occurs in the fax process.
 
Email-to-fax with Multiple Attachments Function (web mail)
  1. Make sure all the installation and the default settings are correct. When using the system for first time, run the Preferences program or open the Tiffwk16.ini file and verify the settings.
  2. After composing your document, pull down the "File" menu and press the "Print" button.
  3. In the Print window, specify "Tiffworks" as the printer.
  4. Press the "OK" button. The file will be saved (i.e. "C:\Windows\Temp\ctimail.tif").
  5. Go to HKBN and login.
  6. Click the "E-mail to Fax" button.
  7. Click the "Attachment' button.
  8. Click the "Browse" button. In the "Browse for file" box, choose the appropriate filename of your composed document in C:\Windows\Temp directory and then click the "Open" button.
  9. Click the "Upload" button.
  10. For attaching the second or more files at one time, press "Start", and go to "Programs", "Tiffwork" and "Preferences".
  11. "Tiffwork Preferences C:\Tiffwork16\tiffwk16.ini box" will appear on the screen. Type C:\Windows\Temp in the field of "Default Directory". Type a new filename in the field of "File Name". Click the "OK" button, the word "Done" will blink on the screen for confirmation. Press the "Close" button.
  12. Back to HKBN Web site, repeat step 2-4 and step 8-9. All the attached files will be shown on "File Already Attached Field". Click the "Done" button to confirm the files attached or click the "Delete" button to delete any unwanted file.
  13. "Email-to-Fax" screen will appear, fill up the relevant fields and click the "Send" button. Your message and the attachments will then be sent to the recipient's fax machine(s).

CTIm@il Fax for Internet/Netscape mail user
Fax procedures of Internet Mail
  1. Click the "file" menu and select "Print"
  2. In the "Printer" box, select "TiffWorks" from "Name" tab, then click "OK"
  3. In the "HKBN Fax" screen, input LoginID in "Account" field, input password in "Password" field.
  4. You can also click the confirmation reports for successful and fail fax transmission for your reference
  5. Enter at most 12 fax numbers in the space provided
  6. Click the "Send" button for fax transmission.  Click "Canc el" if needed.
  7. Press the "OK" button.

Notes:

  1. Local fax is only applicable to WIN95.  Document will be f axed five times at most if any failure occurs in the fax process.
  2. Since HKBN fax services is processed via PSTN, HK$0.033/minutes PNETS charge will be debited to your account.


Newsgroup Information

This installation guide is intended for all Internet access users who are going to use Netscape Communicator 4.04, Outlook Express for Macintosh and Outlook Express at Netscape Messenger as their news reader.

Before start

  • Install and set up your modem according to the documentation comes with your modem.
  • Make sure your computer is able to connect to HKBN.
Alternative procedures can be used to set up your Netscape Messenger as a news reader. For users who use different news readers, please refer to the documentation comes with your software.

For users who use network (LAN, WAN or MAN etc.), please consult your network administrator for further information before you start the configuration procedures.

If you are using the Internet Explorer version 3.02, no newsgroup software is needed. You can download the Netscape Communicator 4.04 for Windows 95. Please refer to your computer software and follow the instructions below for your settings.

Netscape Communicatior 4.04 News Reader Configuration Guide

  1. Start Netscape Communicator 4.04, select Collabora Discussion Groups from Communicator menu.
  2. Select New Discussion Group Server from File menu with Netscape Message Center window
  3. Input news.hkbn.net in the Server field of New Discussion Groups Server window. Press OK button to proceed next step. (Please connect to HKBN now if you are not)
  4. Right click on news.hkbn.net, then select Subscribe to Discussion Groups ...
  5. Wait until all news group are downloaded to your computer.
  6. Select Search For a Group tab in Communicator : Subscribe to Discussion Groups window.
  7. Select the news group you want to subscribe then press the Subscribe button. Press OK button when finished.
  8. Double click on news.hkbn.net to see all the news groups you subscribed. Double click on any news group to read the topics inside, all related topics will be shown in Netscape Discussion windows (as depicts in step 9)
  9. Double click on any news topic to read its content.
Outlook Express News Reader Configuration Guide

  1. Start Outlook Express, select Accounts from Tools menu.
  2. Select News tab from Internet Accounts dialog box, press Add button then select News
  3. Enter a nickname in Your Name dialog box. Press Next < button to proceed next step.
  4. Input your email ID in Internet News E-mail Address dialog box. Press Next < button to proceed next step.
  5. Enter news.hkbn.net in the Internet News Server Name dialog box. Press Next < button to proceed next step.
  6. Select I will establish my Internet connection manually in the Choose Connection Type dialog box. Press Next > button to proceed next step.
  7. Press Finish button in the Congratulations dialog box.
  8. Internet Accounts dialog will re-appear after configuration procedures finished. Press Close button in the dialog. (Please connect to HKBN now if you are not)
  9. Press Yes button for the question Would you like to download newsgroups from the news server you added?
  10. Please wait until all newsgroups are downloaded from server. It may take about 4-5 minutes.
  11. Select the newsgroups you want and press the Subscribe button. Press OK when finished
  12. You are now able to read all the newsgroups which you subscribed with Outlook Express.
Outlook Express News Reader News Reader Configuration Guide for Macintosh

  1. Start Outlook Express, select Preferences... from Edit menu.
  2. Select News from Preferences... dialog box, and fill in the following values. Press OK button when finished.
    Server name : HKBN News Server Server Address : news.hkbn.net
  3. Double click on the HKBN News Server icon on the left panel of Outlook Express Window.
  4. In the dialog box, "Would you like to download the list of newsgroups from this server?" Press Yes button. (Please connect to HKBN now if you are not).
  5. Please wait until all newsgroups are downloaded to your computer.
  6. Select the newsgroups you want to subscribe to, then press the Subscribe button on the top panel. Close the HKBN News Server window when finished.
  7. Click on the newsgroup on the left panel and see the topics inside.


Set Options

Create New Folder
To create a new folder, you should choose "Option" and type the name of the new folder in the space provided. The folder name must be in English characters or numbers which is less than 30 digits or characters. Finally, click the "Create" button. The new folder will be created instantly.
 
Set Your Name
Type your name or alias in the box provided, and then click "OK" button. The name will be saved and shown on your outgoing mail. If you leave the box blank, your outgoing mail will show you email address only.
 
Set Signature
Type the message in the box provided, and then click "OK" button. The message will be saved. Everytime when you check the "with signature" box, the mail send will be appedned with what you have typed previously.
 
Change Password
If you want to change your password, you should enter both the old password and the new password, then doing the confirmation by re-typing the new password. Finally, click the "Save" button. It is recommended to change your password regularly in case of the security concerns.
 
Set Fax Document
  1. Number of lines per pages Enter the number lines per fax page in order to set the total number of lines going to be printed on each fax page.
  2. Send with Cover Page? Click this box in order to send fax with a cover page.
  3. Reply if fail? Click the "Reply if fail" box. An email will be sent to you if the fax failed to transmit to the destination after five times attempts.
  4. Reply if success? Click the "Reply if success" box. An email will be sent to you if the fax successfully transmits to the destination.
 
Set Auto-Reply or Auto-Forward
Auto-Reply
  1. Select the appropriate circle which is next to the "Auto-Reply" button.
  2. Enter your defaulted reply message.
  3. Click the "Save" button to confirm that whenever an email receive, the defaulted message will be sent to the author automatically.
  4. Or click the "Reset" button to resume the normal setting.
 
Auto-Forward
  1. Select the appropriate circle which is next to the "Auto-Forward" button.
  2. Enter your designated email address in the space provided.
  3. Click the box if you want to have a copy of the email(s) in your mail box.
  4. Click the "Save" button to confirm or click "Reset" to change the information.


Logout

When you want to quit HKBN Web Mail, please be reminded to click the "Logout" button in Inbox. However, if you forget to logout, or logout unproperly, you will receive an error message of "Your account is locked when you login second time"; then you should click the "Continue" button ONE TIME ONLY to proceed.
 
Last Logout Date/Time
You can check your last login time in your inbox whenever you login to your web mail.
